Renowned graphic designer Steve Frykholm and writer Clark Malcolm, with a combined 79 years at Herman Miller, tell stories of the people, products, and events behind the 107-year-old company. Threads is an interactive live event presented in major cities and includes images, video clips, and audio segments from Herman Miller’s long history of design and innovation. Audiences choose the topics to be discussed and Steve and Clark, through a back and forth interchange, weave the stories.
It’s unrehearsed and spontaneous.
When Herman Miller asked us to capture and illustrate Threads on video, we started thinking about how to best capture that spontaneity. Budget parameters mandated a one-day shoot only. So, we suggested a controlled studio approach with a basic set, four cameras and a casual filming environment that would encourage Steve and Clark’s spontaneous interaction while capturing as many stories as possible. Their recollections and anecdotes were woven together with visuals from the vast Herman Miller Archives to help illustrate eighteen Threads stories.
